BIOPHILIA AT MIDDLE EIGHT HOTEL
Sculpture | London | United Kingdom | Curator - Kate Fensterstock
Biophilia is a dynamic art installation that evolves with its surroundings, adapting in shape and form to harmonise with the environment in which it resides. At the entrance of the Middle Eight Hotel in Covent Garden, its wool-coated neon tubes seamlessly interacted with the iconic driftwood wall, creating a striking fusion of organic and contemporary design.
This artwork explores the natural cycle of circadian rhythm through a dynamic interplay of light and colour. Changing on the hour, every hour during daylight, Biophilia mirrors the full spectrum of sunlight, from the first light of dawn to the golden hues of sunset. Soft, warm tones of sunrise transition into vibrant midday blues, lush greens inspired by nature, and the deep ambers of dusk. By aligning with the body’s internal clock, the piece highlights the vital role of light in mental health, well-being, and maintaining a balanced sleep-wake cycle.
More than just an artwork, Biophilia is an immersive experience that subtly influences mood, energy, and perception. By reconnecting viewers with the rhythms of nature, it serves as a reminder of the unseen forces that shape our daily lives, encouraging a deeper awareness of the profound relationship between light, environment, and human well-being.
