The Mothership Connection

Zak Ove Sculpture | Public Art | Frieze Art Fair

I had the privilege of working with Zak Ove to bring this amazing totem pole to life. Zak wanted to make a work that opened up conversations around how African diasporic people were used as slaves and indentured labour to create what are now considered some of the defining buildings and architecture in the USA.

Each layer of this totem travels us through some part of the history of the African diasporas involvement in the building of Western modernity. To crown this moment he has used a Mende helmet mask worn by woman in ceremonies of healing.

I believe the lighting needed to dramatise the myth, giving curiosity and playfulness to each facet of the totem. This narrative would guide you through the story which unfolds in front of you allowing each section to have its own importance and individuality.

I wanted the drama to be palpable by back lighting his design, colour and shapes.
