The Living Lantern

NEON studio | Public Art | Globle

The Living Lantern is an artwork that appears to be alive. As the wind changes so does the artwork's behaviour, always in a state of transformation. The central theme for the design was to create an art piece that people felt a deep connection with.

The lantern encourages the audience to reach a meditative state through its perceived controlled breath. This twinned with an ever changing series of slow and abstract light animations, results in waves of change in appearance over time.

We wanted to create an artwork that had two personalities; By day the sun illuminates the skin of the artwork highlighting its materiality and the movement of the petals. The Lantern looks at home alongside other natural elements such as trees and plants; By night, the focus reverses, light is emitted from the artwork's core which spills out. The petals open and close creating beams of colours of varying intensity. The effect is hypnotising and dreamy.

So far the Living Lantern's journey has take it to Hsinchu, Brisbane, Athens and New York.
